What to Expect in Individual Therapy: A Guide to Taking Care of Yourself
Life can get overwhelming, and when schedules get busy, self-care is often the first thing to go. We focus so much on taking care of others and tackling our never-ending to-do lists that we forget to take care of ourselves. If you find yourself in this situation, it’s time to make yourself a priority. Individual therapy is a great way to do just that.
Why consider individual therapy?
Are you experiencing feelings of anxiety, depression, burnout, stress, trauma, or career uncertainty? Maybe you’re just in an overall funk that you can’t seem to shake. Or perhaps you’re looking to work on yourself and strengthen certain relationships in your life. Whatever your circumstances, individual therapy can provide the support you need. Together, we’ll explore what you’re experiencing, set goals for treatment, and develop a plan to help you achieve those goals.
Who Can Go to individual therapy?
Anyone can go to therapy! Yes, anyone of any age can benefit from therapy. I’ve worked with kids as young as five and adults in their 70s and everyone in between. We all have struggles, no matter where we are in life, so let’s talk about them! Therapy offers a collaborative approach to discussing your concerns, brainstorming ideas, and learning new skills that might be the perfect fit for you.
What happens in individual therapy?
If you’re new to therapy, it’s natural to feel nervous or overwhelmed. But there’s nothing to be afraid of. Yes, we might discuss some heavy or uncomfortable topics, but remember that you’re in a safe environment where you can process and work through difficult feelings.
During your first session, we’ll discuss what brings you to therapy, your goals, and we’ll come up with a treatment plan to help you reach those goals. Here’s what you can expect:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Therapy
I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These approaches involve learning different skills and tools during our sessions, which you can then apply in your everyday life. We’ll discuss what worked well for you and what didn’t, and you’ll have “homework” assignments to try out new techniques between sessions.
Eclectic Approach to Meet Your Needs
While I often use CBT and Solution-Focused Therapy, I believe therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all. One theoretical approach won’t work for everyone, so I use an eclectic approach to meet you where you’re at and use methods that will work best for you
What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Initial Discussion
Your first session is all about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, your personal history, and what you hope to achieve. This conversation helps us set the foundation for our work together.
Goal Setting
We’ll identify specific goals for your therapy. Whether you want to manage anxiety, overcome depression, improve relationships, or simply feel better, we’ll create a plan tailored to your needs.
Treatment Plan
Based on our discussion and your goals, we’ll develop a treatment plan. This plan will guide our sessions and ensure we’re making progress towards your desired outcomes.
The Benefits of Individual Therapy
Personalized Attention
In individual therapy, you get one-on-one attention, allowing us to dive deep into your unique experiences and challenges. This personalized approach ensures that the strategies we develop are specifically tailored to you.
Confidential and Safe Space
Therapy provides a confidential and safe space where you can be open and honest without fear of judgment. This environment allows you to explore your thoughts and feelings freely.
Development of Coping Skills
Through therapy, you’ll develop a “toolbox” of coping skills to help you manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other challenges. These skills are practical techniques you can use in your daily life.
Improved Mental Health
Therapy can lead to significant improvements in your mental health. By addressing the root causes of your concerns and developing effective coping strategies, you can achieve a greater sense of well-being.
Common Concerns About Therapy
Feeling Nervous or Overwhelmed
It’s completely normal to feel nervous or overwhelmed about starting therapy. Many people share these feelings. Remember, the goal of therapy is to support you and help you feel better.
Discussing Difficult Topics
Some sessions may involve discussing difficult or uncomfortable topics. While this can be challenging, it’s an important part of the healing process. You’re in a safe space, and I’m here to support you every step of the way.
Commitment to the Process
Therapy requires a commitment to the process. Progress takes time, and it’s important to be patient with yourself. We’ll work together to achieve your goals at a pace that feels right for you.
